In Nigeria, chronic kidney disease is an affliction equivalent to a death sentence. The reason is not far-fetched: there are few adequately equipped dialysis centers to cater to the urgent medical needs of sufferers and the fact that the majority of those afflicted are too poor to afford expensive dialysis treatment. Most disheartening is that chronic kidney disease (CKD), especially the catastrophic, life-threatening end-stage-kidney disease, is assuming frightening epidemic proportions in Nigeria. The majority of the sufferers are also young people between the ages of 25 and 40 who are in the most productive years of their lives. Kidney disease sufferers face a complex set of challenges, with the poor, vulnerable and underprivileged in the society facing even more daunting challenges. This segment of the population can barely meet their basic needs for food, shelter, and clothing, much less access to expensive medical treatment and intervention in diagnosing, treating, and managing kidney failure.
Overall, the ratio of families with contact with CKD is very high. The anguish endured by sufferers and their families is heartbreaking, not counting the financial and emotional costs of the disease. Both dialysis treatment and consumables are very expensive and beyond the reach of the average Nigerian. Without proper medical intervention, mortality from terminal kidney failure is almost 100% within three months of diagnosis. In the absence of health insurance plans with wide coverage, the poor and underprivileged in Nigeria mostly succumb to kidney failure due to financial constraints.
An opportunity now exists to contribute to this caregiving initiative that addresses the medical needs of the poor and vulnerable CKD sufferers in Nigeria. Providing hope to afflicted community members serves a multi-dimensional purpose for their family members and dependents. It will go a long way in restoring faith in our social obligation to be our brother’s keeper.
